MOSH_UNIT

A standalone Windows app built only for datamoshing. You draw named effects (Bloom, Freeze, Reverse, Shuffle) onto a clip, stack them, and export an MP4 with audio. It uses real byte-level datamoshing, no AI, and works offline. Best for people who want the look quickly without learning After Effects or the command line. $7.99 as a one-time purchase.

Adobe After Effects

The industry compositor. It can produce datamosh looks with a paid third-party plugin or with careful manual work, and it is powerful for everything around the effect too. The trade-offs are an ongoing subscription and a steep learning curve. Overkill if datamoshing is all you want.

Avidemux

A free, cross-platform video utility. With the right codec you can delete keyframes by hand to create classic melts and blooms. It is the traditional free route and it works, but it is manual, fiddly, and gives no effect preview until you play the file.

ffmpeg

A free command-line powerhouse that can re-encode and manipulate frames however you script it. Maximum control and fully automatable, but there is no interface and no visual feedback. For people who are already comfortable in a terminal.

Which datamoshing tool should you use?

  • You want the look fast, on Windows, without learning software: MOSH_UNIT.
  • You want it free and you know your way around codecs: Avidemux.
  • You want to script or batch it: ffmpeg.
  • You already work in After Effects daily: an After Effects plugin.

Questions

What is the best datamoshing tool?
It depends on your priority. For the fastest result on Windows with no After Effects, MOSH_UNIT is the simplest. For a free option you can drive Avidemux or ffmpeg by hand. There is no single best tool, only the best fit for your platform, budget and patience.
Is there a free datamoshing tool?
Yes. Avidemux and ffmpeg are both free and can datamosh through manual keyframe removal or scripting. They are more technical than a purpose-built app, but they cost nothing.
What formats does MOSH_UNIT support?
MOSH_UNIT reads all common video formats (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM and more) through the bundled FFmpeg, and always exports MP4 at the highest quality with your audio kept.
Does MOSH_UNIT run on Mac or Linux?
No. MOSH_UNIT runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 only. There is no macOS or Linux version. FFmpeg is bundled, so there is nothing else to install.
How much does MOSH_UNIT cost?
MOSH_UNIT is a one-time purchase of $7.99 in early access (regular price $9.99 after launch). There is no subscription.
